crib bumper or no crib bumper?

so that is my question.

i keep seeing articles about how bumpers increase the risk of SIDS in infants.  is there substance to this?  i'm going to do more research, but i thought i'd throw this into the blogging abyss.  anyone know?

share your thoughts, knowledge, facts, etc.  and make sure to label them as such.

I never had them, partly because I'm cheap and lazy, and partly because I think it's a cleaner look without them.

I had them with Marianne and then she was always managed to get stuck or tangled in them. At the time I had no idea about the controversy that was starting to brew.

I've read passionate moms who feel both ways about bumpers. (SIDS risk! Without bumpers they'll get stuck in the crib slats or bang their tiny heads!) But since Marianne still managed to get a leg stuck through the bars even with bumpers (and caught in the bumpers more than once) I can see how there might be some issue with them. I haven't used them for the other three kids and it's worked out better that way. But as for actual research, I don't know....

Lily kept waking herself up hitting the bars once she could roll around. And I've seen a lot of pictures of people's kids with their legs sticking through the bars. We eventually got a mesh bumper called a breathable bumper or something like that which velcroed around the bars. I think I've seen them at Babies R Us.

we have a bumper and he still manages to get his foot stuck out of them most nights (7 months old). But, it's a winnie the pooh bumper and he actually looks at the pictures and smiles at his "friends" as he's going to bed. So... it might provide some padding, perhaps not, certainly doesn't keep his feet in, but it's tied in knots so it won't come off anytime soon. Could that be more vague? ;-)

My 2 cents, I had them for the twins, my mom made the. I didn't have them in thier cribs until I separated them, which was right around 3-4 months. Before that, they were either sleeping with us or sharing a crib. I really liked them. Especially since Zeke sleeps pretty crazy and Hazel likes to sleep in the corner. The bumpers definitely did thier job. I have read a lot about the tie to SIDS, but I think that you just need to know your baby. And make sure the bumpers are fastened properly. I never had a problem with them getting stuck in the bumpers or anything. When the babies started to stand on them or pull them, then I removed them. That is all, my friend.

Mine have all loved the bumper. One used it as his pillow. I guess it never bothered me because my kids generally sleep in my room until they are old enough to sleep 10 hours and by then they are passed the SIDS age and fully capable of moving all around and not suffocating. PLUS, I don't CIO or bottle feed. Those parents have higher incidence of SIDS.
